Spring 2019, Aarhus
Museum Ovartaci has for the exhibition TRANSITION asked recognized artists from outside the museum and its network, to assist in shaping the motion of the organization towards a whole new chapter in the museum's history - a new future.
In November 2017 the museum issued an Open Call with an invitation to artists to outline ideas for artworks that relate to the museum's vision and history. We received 124 applications, of which we have chosen 43 artists, who in every way challenge our usual form of practice - including the artist Joanna Magierecka.
In the process of curating the exhibition we emphasized originality of the concept and quality of the previous works - both witch Joanna Magierecka`s proposal possess. Joanna's project was also selected because her work relates to the place - the psychiatric hospital as such - and the people who come here. In her description and previous works Joanna shows a very strong and at the same time an appealing aesthetic expression, where she works seriously, purposefully and with great understanding of material and the matter of the subject.
For the exhibition TRANSITION at Museum Ovartaci, I imagine that the installation takes over one of the rooms, with video films based on stories, elements and visual material gathered from museum collections. I want to visit, film, research, retrieve archive material and weave them together with what I've already produced, to a new whole. An interactive installation, Ruins Ovartaci. In itself, in a poetic interpretation, the work embraces the museum's actual transition, from one place to another.
At the same time, I want to create a space where the audience can share their own experiences, memories and stories.
